“I don’t think MIC media simply do podcasting training, they’re also teaching life skills. Podcasting is important. We’re future-proofing young people by giving them a taste of a potential career and upskilling them at the same time.”

About

PIE helps people become ‘future-ready’. They work with vulnerable young people, special needs learners and unemployed women. We worked with PIE on a peer mentor project for new Year 7’s and community social action project too.

Mission

Provide groups of vulnerable young people, during lockdown with a creative project with an industry expert, that would develop their skills, knowledge, confidence and cultural capital.

Goals

  • Boost knowledge about how to listen to and make podcasts
  • Instigate a desire for the groups to make their own podcasts

Challenges

  • No skills in-house to provide podcast training
  • Young people had zero knowledge of podcasts
  • Required creative, fun, friendly and accessible training especially for vulnerable under 16’s
  • Not outsourced trainers before
  • Some training must be delivered online according to covid restrictions

Solutions

  • An ‘industry-led’ experience
  • x2 6-week Bespoke podcast training programmes
    • x1 ‘peer mentor support’ project delivered online (lockdown 2020)
    • x1 ‘social action’ project adapted for in-person delivery (lockdown 2021)
    • 10 young people aged 12-18 trained as podcasters
    • x2 podcasts launched with 3 episodes
  • 2 taster sessions delivered in schools
  • Tailored via consultation with the client to meet needs, beneficiary abilities, and funding obligations
“MIC are approachable and friendly with young people. That’s key, it’s what we look for, suppliers who can engage with a group of teenagers as a role model and at the same time can get a session done with a group who don’t always listen!”

“Working with MIC has built my confidence to outsource more aspects of our training programmes. It’s made me think about how we can partner with other social enterprises. MIC’s the one we keep going back to time after time.”

One of the boys who did some of the interviews in the podcast project, was shy and didn’t have the greatest of confidence. He’s now got a part-time job. He said that doing the podcast has helped him build up his confidence to speak to people and to put himself out there a little bit more.
